Packing Tips
Have a Safer and Easier Storage Experience
- Use lots of newspaper to cushion glass kitchenware.
- Don't overload boxes - if they get too heavy, they'll be harder to move and will be more likely to break.
- Clearly mark the content of each box with a permanent marker on the outside of the box. Indicate which room the box belongs to - you'll be happy you did when it's time to unpack.
- Make sure to turn in a change of address at the post office.
- Never store electronics in a storage area that is not climate controlled. This can damage curcuit boards and picture tubes with temperature extremes.
- Take valuables such as important documents, jewelry, furs, and family photo albums with you and not in the moving truck.
- If moving with pets make sure to bring food and water for them. A calm area such as a spare bedroom is recommended for pets when furniture and boxes are being moved in.
- Take inventory of your belongings before they're packed, in case you need to file an insurance claim later on. Take picures or video tape your belongings. Record all serial numbers of electronic equipment.
- Start using up food items so there is less to pack and possibly spoil.
- Switch utility services to your new address. Inform electric, trash, water, newspaper, magazine subscription, telephone and cable companies of your move.
- Shop around for new auto insurance policies, especially auto coverage.
